Bob received his certification in financial planning in 1986 from the College for Financial Planning. His financial services career began in the late 1970's as an agent for Guardian Life Insurance Company, later transferring a small financial planning firm to what was then one of the largest private real estate firm's in the country. With the establishment of a new Financial Services division, Bob became a Regional Vice President for Financial Services and ultimately, took control of the financial services division in it's entirety until he left for private practice in 1986.

Compass Financial Planning was formed that same year, through Bob's vision for a firm who at it's heart, held fast to the value of financial planning. As Founder and President, he guided Compass through it's infancy until 1994, when he left private practice to accept a post as Vice President of Investment Management for a "for-profit" division of the New Jersey Medical Society. The new venture quickly moved away from financial planning as it's core competency, opting to focus almost exclusively on investment management and advisory services. In his heart, Bob's unwavering commitment to the value of financial planning and the financial planning process never waned.

In early 1995, just after the birth of his daughter Brittany Marie, the lure of private practice called again and Barry Capital Management was formed in spring of that year.

Today the firm is a Fee-Only advisory firm and at it's heart is, as one would expect, that same commitment to the value of financial planning and the financial planning process.

"There's no reason that high-end, comprehensive financial planning can't be made available to the middle and upper middle income client," Bob has said many times. While Barry Capital retains more than it's share of high net worth clients, the focus of the firm has long been to service people and families of more modest means.
Local Commitment
Active since the onset, Bob was Elected to the Northern New Jersey Board of Directors of the then, IAFP (International Association for Financial Planning) in 1986 as Vice President of Marketing. He followed that with his election as President-Elect in 1987, then three consecutive terms as President in 1988, 1989 and the again in 1990.

After his executive committee involvement he returned for three more years, one as Ethics Chair and two as Vice President of Programs and Education.

He has served on the Foundation Board of Hackettstown Hospital and the Board of Trustees of Summerfield United Methodist Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Global Commitment
FPA was formed in 1999 and with it came the dawn of a new era in professional financial planning in America. FPA now represented the nation's largest body of professional advisors with nearly 29,000 members nationwide.

Both the IAFP and ICFP had elected their own Association President's during the nearly two years of merger discussions that culminated in the FPA's forming. Each of those two historical figures, Roy Diliberto, CFP
® Philadelphia and Guy Cumbie, CFP®
of Fort Worth Texas served out their terms in consecutive order as FPA's first and second National President.

In 2001 in it's first internal selection process, the Board chose Bob to serve as the Association's first Elected President in 2002. He concluded ten years of service at the National level with his term as National Chair in 2003.

He served as a distinguished guest speaker in Japan twice at the JAFP National Conventions in Tokyo and Osaka. He also spoke as a distinguished guest twice in Brazil for the Brazilian Association, once in Sao Paulo and again in Rio. He has appeared on many television shows, been quoted in the national and local media and has spoken extensively on the topic of financial planning. In 2003, Research Magazine said about him; "As one of the chief architects of the professions ongoing makeover, he has become it's most eloquent voice."
National Commitment
In 1992 Bob served as a Member of the National Council on Chapter Relations. Sensing both his vision and talent, he was elected in 1992 to serve on the National IAFP Board of Directors. In his 7 years at the IAFP National level, he served in many capacities.

He was Chair of the Ethics Committee for three of those years and the Committee's board liaison for two more. He Chaired the Strategic Issues Advisory Council for two years, was a member of the Associations, Executive and Compensation Committees.

In 1999 he was selected as one of only four board members to represent the IAFP in it's merger discussions with the ICFP (Institute of Certified Financial Planners) in an effort to merge the nation's two largest and most prominent financial planning professional and membership organizations.
